A former student of mine, William Mickelsen, who likes to be called "Mick" is quite a movie buff in his own right. For several months we corresponded about movie trivia. Some of the facts unearthed were quite interesting, as well as the charm and individuality that Mick let come through in his emails. I will share some of them because they have interest and merit, and because the world needs to get to know Mick.

Sorry to hear that some asshole shortened your theatrical career, but then there are assholes everywhere, right? Orvon Gene Autry was a telegrapher and he was discovered by old sage and wit, Will Rogers. Autry had the Midas touch. He was a billionaire by the time he kicked the bucket in 1998. He was the first western artist to get a gold record, the first one to sell out Madison Square Garden, and the first one to have Dell Comics sell over a million of his comic book adventures. It says he was 5'9" tall. I think it was more like 5'5", but who cares? Even Alan Ladd was taller than he was. Maybe even Robert Blake. Roy Rogers was 5'10" and he seemed to tower over Autry as did most of his co-stars. They did cast a few women in his films that were shorter than him. Roy died also in 1998, a tough year for the singing cowboys. 1998 was the death year as well for E.G.Marshall, Lloyd Bridges, Barry Goldwater, J.T.Walsh, Henny Youngman, Jack Lord, Carl Perkins, Tammy Wynette, Frank Sinatra, Alice Faye, Phil Hartman, and Roddy McDowall.
When did Roy get Trigger? Did you know Olivia de Havilland rode him in ROBIN HOOD? Did Roy ever ride any other horse in his 100 films or his TV show? Who wrote HAPPY TRAILS ?
Leonard Slye was Roy's real handle, of course. As a kid I preferred Roy to Gene, but as an old duffer I have a fondness for William Boyd as Hoppy, with Gabby Hayes and Andy Clyde as sidekicks. God, I have collected all 65 Hoppy films, and about 50 each for Roy and Gene. Sad isn't it? Something to do actually. When I retire, I could spend the first ten years just watching my 12,000films and 3,000 hours of TV series shows. I have 500 hours of just biographies and Actor's Studio interviews.

I DON'T CARE ABOUT WHICH COLOR THE LENSES ARE AS LONG AS THEY DO THE JOB THAT THIS PAIR YOU GAVE DOES BECAUSE MINE HAVE BEEN USED SO MUCH THE LENSES KEEP FALLING OUT AND MY TINKERING ENGINEERING IS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE! I HAD A GOOD APPT WITH THE CORNEA TOP DOG, DR WOO, AND THE OPTOPOTRIST, DR GRIEGGS, THIS WEEK AT THE VA AND I'M BACK IN THE CONTACT BUSINESS THIS WEEK!
