Painting by Jill Somoza
Not Having To Be
Wednesday. Not having to be
anywhere, I’m here,
by choice, or inertia,
this place where I was
yesterday
and may be tomorrow.
The earth spins, circles, and returns
and I’m along for the ride.
What else would I be doing
if I hadn’t been born?
How indelibly
have I stamped myself
onto the airy places
between branches,
and onto the ethereal blue!
