Let There Be

Let there be...

Something had to happen:
two boys, a dog and a rushing river,
five boards and a container of grapes—
how to put these together to establish
something greater than the parts?
they waited for a period of time,
for some moment of inspiration,
some point of light, a promised thing,
and nothing happened, GE didn’t
come through, the bulb too dim,
that filament of whatever, tungsten?,
that makes the vacuum glow did not
do what it was meant to do, like
in all those commercials, all those
cartoon moments of incandescence.
Nothing happened, only some
realization that those boards,
those grapes, that dog should,
somehow, have come together
to make something worth the day.
