Poems Written In Exile At Lake Morton, No. 28

Poems Written In Exile At Lake Morton, No. 28

Our cherished words are changed
by the listener,
who replies to his construction.
At this moment, the conversation is lost
and becomes an exchange of two soliloquies.
Although it is sensed
there are no responses,
the discourse continues,
for if one demanded communication,
he would be ostracized,
for he would be demanding the impossible.

No one wants to admit communication
is impossible, therefore sometimes
the exchange of soliloquies
last past an hour.

So we can continue the illusion
that we are communicating,
we kept talking,
keep talking longer and longer.

Five white pelicans,
one behind the other,
are swimming across Lake Morton.
