THE FIREMAN IS BURNING THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS


The Fireman has burned candles before.
He knows how quickly wax melts,
knows the physics of energy transfer.

Yet he still does it: he still burns
both ends, never wondering
where the energy will come from
to wake up tomorrow.

Perhaps it is possible to burn more slowly.
Perhaps it is possible
to go the distance.
