Yo-Yo Ma, childhood prodigy, has thrilled the world
playing his 1733 Montegnana cello, that is worth
2.5 million dollars, on 90+ albums.
Two Cellos captured my interest a few years ago,
comprised of classically trained cellists, Luka Sulic,
from Slovenia, and Stjepan Hauser from Croatia.

i will have to check out those musicians. i have heard of yo yo ma, and listened a bit but i have not heard of the others. it is amazing to me what some people can do with instruments...some people play them...and some people transcend that.

Cello has to be my favorite instrument in the string section... I have never been fortunate enough to get tickets when Yo-Yo visits... Hey you should check out Apocalyptica... A Finish band on cello playing hard-rock...

ReplyDeleteI play violin now but started out with cello. It is a beautiful instrument indeed but then, so is the violin...if someone other than me play it.

ReplyDeleteI always found the cello a very masculine instrument until I heard a recording of jacqueline du Pre, which made me want to learn to play it so badly. But my parents couldn't afford an instrument or the lessons and I ended up teaching myself guitar, which I played until I had a stroke 30 years ago and lost the feeling in the fingers of my left hand.

ReplyDeleteit's really wonderful when child prodigies truly bloom into masters...
ReplyDeleteI much prefer the cello to the violin (certainly if a beginner plays either of them, but even when it's an expert) - there is something about that grave tone (yet not too deep, like the double bass). Funnily enough, I've just finished reading a book about a violin with far too much of a past, which has inspired greed and envy and subterfuge in others!

ReplyDeleteYo-Yo Ma is an amazing musician and who does not love the mellow music of the cello!? But I remember losing a junior high spelling bee on that word...i spelled it c-h-e-l-l-o. Thanks, Glenn, for a way cool sevenling!
