Deck Decibels
“My body is an ugly masterpiece that lives
off the beauty of sound.”--Chad Sugg.
Residing near
the vast
inland sea of
Puget Sound,
my deck-time
is serenaded
by Soundgarden,
as my old tom
sounds-off to
the neighbor’s cat.
Rarely I beat
my wife soundly
at pinochle.
My grandchildren’s
laughter is the sound
I Iove the most.

I do love both the sound of Soundgarden and the sweet sound of a children...
ReplyDeleteMethinks I see another side of you, Glenn--that doting grandfather who is helpless when confronted with his progeny. Nice sense of place in this.
ReplyDeleteThe sounds of a man at peace with himself and the world about him.

ReplyDeleteSounds a man having reached the age of contentment. What a wondrous place to be.
A couple of parts really made me giggle. The underlayers are priceless, Glenn. My favorite is the part that sounds like you're saying "rarely do I beat my wife." :P
ReplyDeleteI love the title and opening quote as well.
Oh I love this!❤️ Especially the laughter of grandchildren is a cherishable moment indeed!❤️
ReplyDeleteGreat poem, Glenn.
ReplyDeleteSo much great imagery in this. And I chuckled that we both wrote about Puget Sound for our Quadrille, though the results are quite different. I love that you've weaved in loss and life and grandkids' laughter.
ReplyDeleteWonderful poem, Glenn! I've been listening to Soundgarden lo these many days, myself.
ReplyDeleteLovely quadrille Glenn. :)
ReplyDeleteThe best sounds there is, Glenn ~ What a great time with loved ones ~
ReplyDeleteThe sounds of children's laughter is the very best. I'm glad you included that your beating your wife was followed by "at pinochle", lol
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the sound of their laughter, it truly is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great title for all those deck activities going on. I could hear your tom responding to another cat and the playful voices of your grandchildren...sweet.
ReplyDeleteWonderful sounds, Glenn. Your line breaks are excellent in this.
ReplyDeletePlenty of Soundgarden in our house, all the time for about 25 years, but sadly no children for a while.
ReplyDeleteLove this! And oh I so agree....times with a spouse and the smiles and laughter of grandchildren....perfect! And yes, deck activities include all of those sounds and that tom cat howling too! :) Smiling I am.
ReplyDeleteSo many layers here. So much sound, great all of it.
ReplyDeleteLove this, Glenn.
ReplyDeleteNice!
ReplyDeleteI can see how the laughter of the grandchildren is the loveliest.
ReplyDeleteI like the feeling you create by using deck-time as your setting, opening with 'living off the beauty of sound' quote and weaving sound into each stanza...
