Winter’s Grail
“The first snow is like the first love.”
--Lara Biyuts
The northern climes suffer winter’s disdain,
buried in tons of icy snow,
which is fine if you’re a Dane.
In southern climes, at least
winter clears out the smog;
hot diggity damn.
Silver tip sleeps like
something comatose, waiting
for the change to Spring.

I'd like to sleep until spring without freezing. Sounds like a good idea.
ReplyDeleteLove love LOVE the double meaning in that last line, Glenn, with "spring" allowing for noun or verb. Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteOh I do love the spring and the winter... the grey misery of inbetween is what I cannot stand.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the Spring season so I can spring too.
ReplyDeleteLove it, Glenn - the poem, not winter. Especially the "hot diggety dang".
ReplyDeleteNice play on the word spring.
ReplyDeleteMust say I miss winter not a whit!
ReplyDeleteVery cool (if you'll pardon the pun) poem and great ending
ReplyDeleteHot diggity, spring it on!! 😊
ReplyDeleteClearly I'm not a Dane, because I despise snowy weather. I prefer the warmer southern climes. Wonderful take on the prompt today.
ReplyDeleteI like the wordplay of that last line.
ReplyDelete"Silver tip sleeps like / something comatose, waiting" -- Very cool, so to speak. Beautiful line.
ReplyDeleteAre you referring to the famous Bozeman strain, a bear, or something else asleep? Whichever, I liked your piece here Glenn!
ReplyDeleteI like the whole poem, and I particularly like the way you laid it out. It's a pretty looking package with a lovely gift inside.

ReplyDeleteWell, hot diggity damn, winter finally came to the heartland, and we got 7 inches of snow yesterday. What last week was drear, this week is sparkling and pristine. Thanks for the hot diggity damn. I haven't use the term for ages, and it rolled off the tongue in the most pleasant way!
Also enamored of your wordplay and playfulness!
ReplyDeleteSuch a stellar closing!❤️ We do have winters here but temperature is nowhere near to arrival of snow! Sigh.
ReplyDeleteThis left me smiling and nodding in agreement
ReplyDeleteI really like the flow in this piece. Perfect ending. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI long for the change to spring but, winter has barely begun. It's been really cold here.
ReplyDeleteSilver tip sleeps: but, oh, those tips are so delightful once they pop!
ReplyDeleteA good use for winter: "winter clears out the smog;"
ReplyDeleteI got a chill from ’winter’s disdain’ and the tons of icy snow, Glenn, but your haiku warmed me.
ReplyDeleteI love the opening quote and growling bearishness of winter sleeping till spring!

I reckon there's a few more months of suffering through this greyness and damp. I ready for spring to spring!
