Down to the Juke

Down to the Juke

“If I don’t have red, I’ll use blue.”
--Pablo Picasso.

Down deep
cobalt is
the bayou;

there’s a juke joint
named Sapphire’s.

Place jumps
with jive
and sweat.

Miss Sapphire
owns the club;
she moans
the blues
so sultry,
you’re hard
while bobbing.

Sailors
in blue jumpers,
pound the planks,
hurrah
for the Navy.

  1. I see you took some blue inspiration from Picasso, Glenn! I love the opening lines; they took me right there to the bayou - and Sapphire’s. Cobalt is one of my favourite blue tones, not so much sapphire, it’s too pale, and navy blue just reminds me of school uniform!

  8. You've created a steamy, sultry world in 44 words. It makes me want to know more about this place and the characters who inhabit it. I like how you placed yourself in the midst of it.

  15. Loved the vision it painted, especially as now I have, after the meet, in my head, my version of Glenns' voice telling it to me in raspy HunterThompsonian attitude, that suits the poem to a tee! (is that a saying? "to a tee"? to a ... fist in the eye, Blues and whisky, deep drunken talks on long summer nights!)

  16. Wonderful, sultry, bluesy blues. Great opening line. I had an image of the juke joint in The Color Purple in my head while I was reading this.
