Michito

Michito:

Alas, sir, you are SO mistaken. I had read where Mel Blanc had done the "early voice" of Walter Lantz's fine feathered friend, Woody Woodpecker. It was Blanc that created the woodpecker laugh. Blanc did all the WW cartoons from 1940-1949, when Grace, or Gracie Stafford, who was Walter Lantz's wife, took over voice chores. She was a cutie pie starlet, working as an "actress" from 1935. She was in BLONDIE BRINGS UP BAB7 (1939). She married Lantz in 1940, but she gave up her "career" for 9 years to raise their kids, I guess. She did the voice of WW from 1949-1986. Walter Lantz is credited for coming up with the first color cartoon. It was an Andy Panda one, I think.

Now as to the Master of the Cartoon Voice, Mel Blanc. He did voice work from 1937 to 1989, working in at least 955 animated projects, and several movies. I thought it would be fun to try and look at, and count his character voices. We will have to start the list at 51, because he did at least 50 voices of non-descript animals and people in crowds and machines.

And Christ, that's just the voices I recall and are a matter of record. Mel Blanc; he was a keeper. I hope this little list cracked you up the way it did me; some great characters included there, stirring the cobwebs of calified memory from the 40's, 50's, and 60's.

As to DILLINGER AT THE MOVIES. Glad I could accommodate "your" Dillinger questions --how about you accommodating to mine? I guess you did. I thought it was cool to break down all the times Dillinger or Melvin Purivis appeared on the screen, silver or TV. I, for one, would love to read the Mickelsen "definitive" history of Depression Outlaws & Corrupt Cops. You got one reader right here. Then you jumped for a moment into CASABLANCA. Yup, Hedy Lamarr, even Marlena Dietrich would have been interesting, but only Ingrid Bergman could give you a hard on while you are crying, right? Lena Horne would have been, for me, a welcome substitute for Dooley Wilson in the film. She sang "Stormy Weather" in STORMY WEATHER (1943), or maybe that's a fake out, and she sang it in CABIN IN THE SKY (1943). Which is it?

Baby Face Nelson was quite the cold blooded character, they say. I thought Richard Dreyfuss as Nelson in DILLINGER (1973) was my favorite. Do you remember BABY FACE NELSON (1957) directed by Don Siegel? Dillinger is a character in it. Who played him? It is one I missed last week. Carolyn Jones was the femme, and of course Mickey Rooney was the machine gun kid. Jack Elam played Fatso Nagel, and Elisha Cook Jr. played Homer. You probably missed BABY FACE NELSON in TV in 1995, with C.Thomas Howell as Nelson, Martin Kove as Dillinger, and F. Murray Abraham as Capone. Glad to enlighten you about Lawrence Tierney and Scott Brady as brothers. Just look at them in their later roles. They look a lot more alike, bald, big, and fat. I, like you, absolutely adored DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID. Thanks for the slip of the pen and including little old me with the likes of Charles Laughton and Vincent Price by the way. Nice segue to get from Ana Sage to Jean Lafitte, and THE BUCCANEER. That brings us to the two film versions of this tale. In THE BUCCANEER (1938) directed by Cecil B. DeMille, who played Jean Lafitte? Beulah Bondi, Spring Byington were in it. Anthony Quinn, who was DeMille's son-in-law at the time, played the pirate Beluche. In THE BUCCANEER (1958), who did they get to direct it? Who played Jean Lafitte, and was excellent doing it? Charlton Heston about stole the film with his white wild-wigged portrayal of General Andrew Jackson. Heston played Jackson in another film in the 50's, what was it? Claire Bloom and Ms. Inger Stevens were in it, and our old pal, Lorne Green played Mercier, just before Pa Cartwright emerged.

Coming back to Dillinger dying in front of the Biograph Theater where MANHATTAN MELODRAMA (1934). It, as a film, was kind of a slick crime thriller. Clark Gable played Blackie Gallagher. Who played Blackie as a kid? What actor and actress co-starred in it, who later co-starred with each other more than (6) times. Leo Carrillo was in it too, I think.

I appreciate you already pitching the MICK & BUTT SHOW (yeah, your name will have to go first, it's only fair, since you started all this zany horseshit), to some sponsors. That's the way they did it in the "old days". Now you pitch the show to the producers and agents first, and they pitch it to the "Board of Directors" at Gulf Western or Standard Oil. But just imagine the washers falling off their assholes when you announce we already got TOYOTA as a sponsor, or PROCTOR GAMBLE, or HEAD ON.

As to GOLD FEVER, you skipped right over all those films I mentioned with similar themes. When you started prattling about "Clint" singing GOLD FEVER, I thought for a moment you meant Clint Walker that I had written about. Squint Eastwood by the way never "sang" anything --he whispered it in his raspy baritone. It was almost as good as Marlon Brando singing (?) as Sky Masterson in GUYS AND DOLLS (1955), with Frank Sinatra laughing himself silly in the wings.

Let's come back for a moment to SHANE. That is SHANE (1966), the TV series. You did not answer any of my inquiries about it. I am, by the way, very careful to peruse your emails to endeavor to answer, or at least address, each and every one of your inquiries. Anyway, Moosebreath, David Carradine played Shane. The premise of the short-lived TV series was that Marian's husband, Joe, was killed, and she had to raise little Joey all by herself. The lithe and lovely Jill Ireland played Marian Starrett. A young actor that went nowhere, Christopher Shea played Joey. Carradine was kind of listless and disinterested in this series. Maybe he knew it was heading for cancelation. Still it did run 17 episodes, which is about what Kurt Russell's western series THE QUEST ran. In SHANE, they resurected Rufus Ryker, played by Bert Freed. Tom Tully was in it too. As to the stalwart David Carradine, who has many years left in his career --he has already appeared in 198 films. He is working toward his Dad's record, perhaps? No, he'll never make it. Nor will he match the amount of screen time father John amassed.

Excellent work on the Titty Twister, getting from E.E.Horton to Marilyn Monroe.
Edward Everett Horton was in IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD with Spencer Tracy.
Spencer Tracy was in BOOM TOWN with Clark Gable.
Gable was in THE MISFITS with Monroe. Kudos, sir!

I would have done it like;
E.E.Horton in LOST HORIZONS (1937) with Sam Jaffe.
Sam Jaffe was in THE ASPHALT JUNGLE (1950) with Marilyn Monroe.

And now for my fine twister. Alan Hale Sr. to Lee Remick. Now that sir, makes my nips tingle! Let us see....
Alan Hale Sr. was in SOUTH OF ST. LOUIS (1949) with Joel McCrea.
Joel McCrea was in COLORADO TERRITORY (1949) with Henry Hull.
Henry Hull was in THE FOUNTAIN HEAD (1949) with Patricia Neal.
Patricia Neal was in FACE IN THE CROWD (1957) with Lee Remick.
Man, that took (4) degrees. What did you have in mind?

Your assignment, Mr. Phelps, is to somehow travel from Fess Parker to Claude Rains.

I hope you enjoyed my Blanc list. It still tickles me.

"Every time you hear a bell ring, it means an angel is getting his wings!" Damn rights.

Excuse my alliteration, but alas, Walter Lantz original woodys voice was a woman. I heard Mel Blancs son on the old Dick Cavett show say that his father had produced over 300 regognizable voices and none of them sounded alike which is what I picked up on. He also remarked that his fathers vocal chords were almost twice the size of a normal person, probably from the coroners report. I bet Elvis and some other great voices must have been similarily blessed with that ability. Do you recall Mels characters on The Jack Benny Show especially the Mexican under the Sombrero whose name was Si and his sisters was Sue?You rascal, you hit my Dillinger questions, Biograph and Manhattan Melodrama with Clark Cable but that just scratches the surface with me. I guess its up to me to write the definitive novel on which period of American History has had the most corruption, the beauty of it being that miraculously our founding fathers principles win out in the long long run just to face itself with some new corruption from a different angle. Thats why I think for the most part humanity sucks but not the big picture of America which is why iwannabeamoviemaker like me must be ordained by God to reach the hearts of the audience! Forget the Waco and Idahos Mormon FBI disasters, nothing could compare with the way they were tipped off about the whole catch of Dillinger, the Karpis boys, baby face Nelson, machine gun Kelly, Ma and the Barker gang and others at little bohemia in northern Wisconsin when they all escaped and the FBI only killed three innocent CCC workers. In my opinion the two most corrupt periods are the Civil War and the depression which made and gave the myth to Dillinger and I agree Warren Oates was the best in the movies and a product of the times, no hero no devil, but not the loveable character but a misfit who was very very likable. Melvin Purvis was one of the screw ups on that raid and I believe vindication was his game and not the way Hollywood has portrayed him. Yep, Ben Johnson was Melvis with Warren and did a great job of playing the "Good Guy" with no administrative skills, an actors impossible job with all things going into a movie! I will leave Dillinger and Bogie for awhile to stay in keeping with our format so our sponsors won't have appoplexy over our content with the public.Yes, Hedy Lamarr would have been good as Lisa but not as good as Ingrid. Except for the male relationship of Sam and Rick and the traveling on the trains together the spectre of Lena Hornes doing Sam would have been okay in my book. Do you recall her scene, in what movie, singing Stormy Weather another one that has never left me.Okay, disregard my former statement, The Lady in Red, who wore a white and orange dress on the other arm of Dillinger was Polly Hamilton but lets leave it at the infamous Lady in Red, thats why the Fordism print the legend means something! The two most famous lies that are country has perpetuated on helping our government were AKA Ana Sage and Jean Lafitte, played by who in The Bucanneers and who in Dillinger? Both were told if they would help the good old USA they would not be deported. After there usefullness to us Ana was deported back to her native country of Rumania and Lafitte to the Carribean. Our country has told more and bigger whoppers but never to individuals! I didn't know Tierney and Brady were brothers hot goodies. Charles Laughton in his cameo with Vincent Price in Plaid show humanity in the middle and evil as good as any writer could do. Yes you and other great actors make a big difference in trying to figure out what humanity is all about.I have been deluged with sponsors for our show and stood my ground that only the finest tobacco, alcohol, and scholarly reseached forms of humanity will be our Maltese Falcon. I of course was speaking for the dynamic duo who are the only ones who can unlock the secrets of mankind through correspondence in the public media. The Gold Fever was never touched in any movie like Treasure but the theme of power fever will never end in movies, life and literature along with sex money and you name it. Clint singing Gold Fever was miraculous in Paint Your Wagon in the fact that Lerner and Lowe covered it with a musical twist to mask its hideous head and by the way the only time Clint was upstaged by the best natural actor of all time, his partner, Lee Marvin.Okay Edward in its a mad mad mad mad world with Spencer Tracy: Spence was in Boomtown with the King; the King was in the Misfits with MM.Okay, Alan Hale Sr to Lee Remick

Regards, The man with the plan to scan but not to scam the public, Mickadolphus!
