Prayer at Closing Time

Prayer at Closing Time

Lord, we’re all in help and we need
your trouble: your bottom shelf,
a shot of courage, your cheapest
double. After all these years
of rust and ruin, and bloody knees,
we’ve become your own worst
fears. So part us from this roily sea,
turn our wives into water, turn our
husbands into bread. Next time send
your only daughter; roll away the stone
for the living dead. In spirit, we’ve gone
awry, but if you give us your hand
and save us all, we’ll walk on water,
or at least we’ll try. God help us!
Make this our last call!
