Sledgehammer

painting by Sidney Holmes.

Sledgehammer

“The idle man cannot know what it is to enjoy

rest, for he has not earned it.”--John Lubbock.

I’ve had

those jobs

pouring iron,

with machines,

assembly lines,

picking up dead rats,

and swinging a

sledgehammer

for 8 hours,

and they were work--

no satisfaction

beyond a paycheck;

but as a

Special Educator,

I actually did

good works,

and loved every day.

I do remember the grueling work... it was for money, but it had its benefits. When you left the workplace you left the work behind you. I can imagine that the special education sometimes followed you into your sleep.

Glenn, hard work has its place in one's growth and development as an adult. I think the thing it is best at is showing young people that they don't want to do back-breaking labor for the rest of their lives. Now I do it, but I do it in the yard as a labor of love.

My job as a juvenile P.O. was the hardest work I ever did, but like you in your work as an educator, the most satisfying.

Wonderful work, Glenn. This former (15 year) Special Educator, who left teaching to provide the same services for equally needy adults as a Human Services Coordinator (another decade and a half) doffs his hat at you.

Work that helps others grow and learn is most satisfying! Very good Quadrille!

So many different ways to work, and yours such a gift to you and your students. I feel similarly about my own students.

I doesn’t take a sledgehammer to crack a nut and you’ve summed that up well in your quadrille, Glenn. There are indeed different kinds of work and job satisfaction.

Well said, Glenn!
My daughter left teaching for a year for a different job, but she just returned, partly because she said she didn't feel fulfilled in the other work.

A special educator....does this mean you were a teacher in what we called Special Education? That terms is probably no longer used....but it was when I was teaching highschool many years ago. I always thought all teachers who worked with children of any age were saints.....and especially those who work with special needs kids. It must be a passion, I think, to be a good teacher. I can easily see you doing this Glenn!

A job that is satisfying and fulfilling, doesn't seem like work at all! Working as a special educator must have been so gratifying..

We need more people like you, Glenn. What a satisfying job that sounds.
