To Be A Poet

Painting by Jackson Pollock

To Be A Poet

“Wine is bottled poetry”--
Robert Lewis Stevenson

To be a poet
is to be a cipher, a
witness, a judge, an
artist, a lover, or a
malcontent--the one who sees.

There are as many varied themes for poetry
as there are hobbies, interests, politics,
tragedies and celebrations; a plethora of
possibilities.

“If you have some heavy lifting to do, bring in
the poets.”

Since I was a teenager, as soon as I was introduced
to the free verse of Walt Whitman & the scatological
energy of Ginsberg, poetry became my favorite form
of communication.

First leap from the nest
tests new wings, answers the call
of soul, of nature.

Poets in foxholes have shared the horrors of war
much more clearly than novelists or reporters. Poets
amidst revolutions write the anthems,, the mantras,
the slogans and the manifestos. Poets in love, or
lust, can find the words to woo, to seduce, and to
touch potential partners & future readers.

Personally, I adore our community of poetics, our
sweet family, spread out across the globe, enjoying
the fellowship, the sharing, and the challenge of
trying out new and classic forms.

Pigeons and crows share
the great maple next door, and they
have weaved armistice.

  11. Oh sooooooo good to have you back, Glenn! Loving your words on poets here....and that final haiku is just perfect!
I once took a class on Whitman (well....I didn't finish it), online with the Univ of Iowa Writing Workshop and it began with Whitman's writing, witness to war. Amazing images and words.
And oh yes...........pigeons and wrens, and doves, and peacocks, and plumed of every-kind folks.....dverse is a joyful place!

  15. Good to see you back, Glenn! And with such a motivational poem. Clearly I too am partial to poetry as a form of communication but also superior to all other modes as it communicates irrefutable truth. Love the family:) And scatalogical -- so good. You make that up?

  17. You wrote thus about a decade ago, ias a comment to a poem I wrote entitled "Sneakin' Up On Breakfast". It lives as one of tge coolest comments I ever received.

    "This piece thumps and bumps
    and shakes its ass, Rob,
    written from the gut, and
rife with gems of recall from
the poet who was there. It
    is like Raymond Chandler
    meets Dashell Hammett for
a beer and a bump at the
    Gladiator across the sticky
    table from Larry Levi, where
    even Scorsese could dream
    of plots, and Paul Schrader
    would bullshit with you until
    dawn, where Ledbelly drops
in just before the sun and his
    six string heralds the events
to come. I like the line
    /steel-heart working girls/
for those ladies still stroll in
    the subterranean streets midst
    most of our souls."

Hope you're doing well. I had stopped writing, sidelined by health for a number of years, but my new Pacemaker has me on the keyboards again occasionally, but a bit more casual. Doing a lot of digging into my vault of old writes, doing some revising, and just reading and remembering. I have even had a few sparks of creativity. Birthed a few worthwhile new poems, but my meds and my worn out mind&body don't allow me to churn like I used to... but I am alive, and I got to see my first grandchild born. The wonders of medical technology. Just wanted to say - hey... ✌🏼
