I'm A Believer
Image borrowed from Bing
A pair of Jehovah’s Witnesses jostled to fill the space left by the open door, dazzling smiles rising from the deep well-springs of their faith. I regretted out loud that I didn’t share their convictions and their dismay and concern were palpable. “How do manage to live from day to day without belief?” one asked.
I’M A BELIEVER
Unfair to label me faithless,
I say to the doorstep zealot.
And the petulance in my voice
confirms the precious frailty,
the priceless uncertainty of
my kind: we who scramble up
the ladder of the moment;
we who dance along the highwire
between hope and despair.
