Emily Dickinson Looks At The Beginning Of The War
Emily Dickinson looks at the beginning of the war
There is a certain cant of might,
When pompous pious men
Tout freedom-giving missile blasts
Till Baghdad’s born again.
Heavenly Matamoros
Atta’s paradise
Both murder Unbelievers–
Of Sacerdotal lies.
Some may doubt the reasons
None the missile’s tear
An imperial affliction
Sent to them by air.
Greed and hubris, Shock and Awe
Fuel politicians’ breath–
Down below the Landscape smolders–
With the stench of death.
Santiago Matamoros
(St. James the Arab killer)
is patron saint of Spain.
