Science Is Your Friend

Painting by Rick Mobbs

Science Is Your Friend

Hark,
the heralds trumpet stridently
as Instruction commences
in the misty land of Lemuria.

All the children levitate
to their designated letters,
nestling into their learning niches,
plugging their earphones
into the learning mainframe.

They are led by a Master, who
perched at the helm, with
the control panel,
has multiple outlets
wrapped around his head
like holiday scarves.

Today
the children of ten
study Science.
The great Science “S”s,
lying on their sides
are lined up on the North Face;
hundreds in a row,
blue seats for the gifted,
red seats for the challenged;
one Master per dozen “S”s.
There is no veil of forgetfulness here,
just deeply layered data delving into axis, orbit
and transmutation.

These children work very hard
on Science Mondays, knowing
that Art Tuesdays always follow;
the bright orange and yellow
classrooms of “A”
embrace the joy of creativity
and salve that youthful hunger
for fun, complimenting the grind
of the Natural Sciences
with poetry and painting.
Great Crom, how the children embrace
Art Tuesdays.
