City Afternoon

Burnt City Painting by Jill Somoza

City Afternoon

Before, I heard only
the siren and the next-door
neighbor’s dog in pain.
Now that I’m beginning
to awake,
my loud blue car
displays itself
beside the screaming locust tree.
Even the mulberry
and apricot begin to flame.
We’re making love
in stages: each time
you nudge me harder,
I feel you
deeper, till I’m awake
inside your
colors and your heat,
the flutters in your leaves
the one disturbance
in the quiet
throb
this workday.
