for the last eight years

for the last eight years
our leaders have refused
to give a real speech –
to address issues without choking
on unmentionables
and waxing sentiments
in only one
obstinate direction –
lately
waking up to hope
is like realizing
that we have allowed this
dumbing down
of ourselves
for much too long
