outside, on the streets of
brooklyn, neighbors are swapping
stories with their loud speakers –
the ones on our side are mixing
hip-hop while the other side replies
with salsa, both exhale the unending
breaths of love and loss
punctured by the occasional drive-by
subwoofer that always prevails
