I wanted to please her: I
kindled a fire in the fire-
place, and when I got back
from the Laundromat, I saw
her standing before the fire-
place, holding a burning road
map. "You're burning my road-
maps. Goddamn you."
"Yes," she said,"And last
night right after you passed
out, I burned your book of river-
charts, The Alluvial Mississippi
from Cairo to the Gulf."
