Shake the World Awake
Painting by Percy E. Syer
shake the world awake
& if he buys a harmonica
learns how to breathe in & out
narrow & wide note & chord
how it was a west Texas boy
taught Lennon the old standby
& the Saints march in note after note
a music of order
(orders of saints the names of the gods
a list on a staff blow in draw out
press the tongue to the metal
can it be without words)
this long breath falling away
listening to voices the tongues of angels
in the mouths of strangers saying
let me show you would you show me an order
that makes us shake the holes in the air.
Namaste. Shake the world awake.
