After You Named the First

Painting by Paul Brent

after you named the first

after you named the first
piano, “laura,” you said
there were many pianos
named, “yi-ching,” and led me
down your private gallery
shining a spotlight over each
nameplate as proof:
the spicy-apple piano,
the suspended-bridge-
over-a-lengthy-fall piano,
the twisting-alleyway piano
and then you made me play
Schubert’s Sonata in A
Major, but kept insisting
i was missing all the b-flats
.
