it’s a back-of-the-
envelope calculation –
the number of those
who do not make it
past winter. they leave
so much behind – joyless
fireworks in the basement,
an empty chair at the
table, cruelly clean
clothes, old
jokes, unread papers
that just keep
coming – it is
irreversibly
unbearable
.
