Vasco Nunez de Balboa's "Little Lion"
Leoncico, a blood-red dog,
part mastiff, part greyhound,
with small ears and neck thick
as the isthmus of Panama
tore 40 Indians into bloody confetti,
ate infants Balboa threw to him,
bit off a chief's head.
Next year, my daughter will start
kindergarten at Balboa Elementary.
The school mascot is the Bulldog.
