Last Call
Painting by Mathieu le Nain
Last Call
Sunset and evening star
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
Benton's Leaky Rowboat Bar and Grill:
It’s a good place, this old bar. Safe
We have been hanging out here a while,
floating in between our lives and sleep
so many evenings the barstools that we
started with are relics. May be that
we are, too, relics.
Maybe we are a little holy, too.
Rough-looking from the door, is true.
And when you step inside, sun still in
your face, wearing the uniform of your daily
grind and your habits of speech,
we’ll look you over, maybe twice, before we
go back to what we were saying or that
combination shot for five. It’s okay.
We’ll make room for you.
Nobody needs to drown alone.
