A poem about a strange encounter...
DANCES WITH…
Our lives mingled for a moment
However this encounter changed me forever.
No more will I fear the unknown,
Hesitate to explore my world.
When we met, I faced mortality.
Memories crisp and yet salty,
Air pungent with smoke and fog,
That night etched deep.
I saw you for the first time,
Ebony hair streaked with white, it glowed in the soft light,
I looked in your eyes and saw fear and questions.
My being reflected the same.
I looked around, wondering where to run
When you melted into the blackness and disappeared
To again return.
Upon your return, my thoughts jumbled,
Soft sobs drifted drifted in the night air.
Calmness overtook me and eased away the numbness of my limbs.
You hid from others afraid, afraid of them and they of you.
You came near and touched my leg three times softly
To bind our souls forever.
I fear you no more, for I’ve danced with you.
The fear is gone forever, my spirit is complete.
You will do me no harm, I cherish the experience
Others may scorn, they fear,
But for a moment we became one, I thank the Creator
Of dancing with you my guide,
my skunk, may we always dance as friends
