Light Mother, Dark Mother
Painting by Henry Wallis
LIGHT MOTHER, DARK MOTHER
Death has thick fingers and
ancient eyes
and will eat you for breakfast
and spit out the bones.
She has no mercy.
She will hold you close
but only to stop your breathing.
She is the mother of all sorrow.
She is why we came here
to root in the earth of an
alien planet.
She is what's left when the
soul departs.
Death has thick fingers and
ancient eyes
and no matter where you hide
she will always find you.
