Rothko

Painting by Mark Rothko 1949

ROTHKO

I think he knew he was
on the edge. He hated it
but it was the only place
he felt at home. But the
edge is the edge and it's
like that moment when
Nijinsky floated poised
above the stage--that long
instant when there was
no motion. You could have
photographed him clearly
with a box camera. But
the edge is the edge. It's
a blade and sooner or
later it will cut your
feet from under you and
you'll fall all the way
from glory into nothingness.
But if you're lucky--as
he was--it won't happen
till you're finished.
