Poems Written In Exile At Lake Morton, No.26

Painting by Kay Robinson

Poems Written In Exile At Lake Morton, No. 26

Incense awakened the body
While the soul dozed.

A drop of wax, hand-shaped,
Slid down the candle’s hips.

Inside body, a warm summer rain;
The altar, now a poppy.

She, dark-haired, pressed
The hymn book against her thigh.

He rubs a seashell
Concealed in his shirt pocket.

He looks at her dark hair,
Runs out into the black-suited street.
