Kid's Kingdom

Painting by Rick Mobbs

Kid’s Kingdom

Somewhere far away,
but perhaps not so far,
lies the magic land of Mobbsia,
where children rule.

It is a marvelous dominion
where all the cats can fly
and their magnificent purring
fill the night air with gentle music;
feline lullabies.

There are three moons
and two suns
that chase each other
across a rainbow horizon;
their backsides bare,
but on their opposite sides
you will find faces there—
sometimes cats, sometimes dogs,
even pigs make guest appearances.

In Mobbsia
it is always playtime;
dodge ball, ping-pong, rope skipping, gang tag—
playing hard, serious stuff
because each child understands
play is golden essential
as preparation for their eventual departure
and graduation into adolescence
and other large mysteries.
