The Color of Music
painting by wassily kadinsky
“The Color of Music”
my feathers are jazz,
spinning light
as hair; I’m a
fair-weather
parrot,
rent
into cubicle pieces
working hard
at playing it smooth
on the sax
sucking black reeds
with a swollen slack
tongue;
my blind eye the sun,
I see it all—
it’s mardi gras march
and I’m leading the parade,
my rainbow rhythms
conducted
on a black-and-white stage
as
confetti
notes
fall,
streaking
the
naked
streets
with the color of music
