Our Defiance

Poster by Shepard Fairey

Our Defiance

“There is no week, nor day, nor hour when
tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the
people lose their spirit of defiance.”
--Walt Whitman.

Caught in a nightmare passing as daydream;
suffering with these demonics for three long years.
Our government has become rival teams.
I fill a weeping cup with my sad tears.
I fill my secret chamber with real fears.
I tell you our Republic can not stand
Trump’s fascist lyrics as a one man band.
Each day brings new abuses, smirks, slurs, and lies.
I will vow to help stop Trump with my hand
on a voting lever; and nobody dies.

I like the description "weeping cup". Storing one's tears as a reminder for election day.

I love Shepard Fairey's work. There's a wonderful documentary out there on him, called Obey Giant. Do you know that his original font type comes from the film, "They Live!"? Your diquain tells it like it is. I'm not sure voting is enough as it has been proven they can rig the electronic voting machines, have "accidentally" knocked thousands off of voting registration lists, and otherwise find ways to skew the will of the people at the polling stations.

Glenn, Yes, voting him out is our best chance to change things. Powerful poem Glenn.

Oh, well said! (And the Whitman quote is - unfortunately - spot on.) This such a powerful piece, the form becomes secondary, utterly unobtrusive. When I looked again to discern the form, I found that nearly perfect too. The rhyme scheme is exact. A couple of lines have extra syllables to my reading – but with the different pronunciation of American and Australian English, it might not be so to your ear. In any case, some slight variation to a form can be acceptable – after all, Shakespeare occasionally did it in his sonnets (to avoid monotony, or for a special effect). If you want to slightly rewrite, you have that opportunity during the coming weeks, but it's up to you. In this poem the main thing is the message, the form entirely subservient – and that's working well.

I loved this Glenn. Somebody needs to drum that asshat right outta town. Tired of marching to his stutter tempo. I vow to help stop Trump as well, with my hand — in the most effective place to get the job done, wherever that might be. Rage on brother!

Your words reverberate. reverberate. i hope they lift and fly and let it be known to your country. Not today. Not today.

Voting him out is the only way to go, Glenn. He’s a slippery customer. We may be in a similar situation if Boris Johnson takes over as PM next week. Funny how they look alike: similar hair, strange speech, big egos and the belief that they are irresistible.

By now you have enough to publish "My Trump Poems" -- if nothing else, he has served as your muse.
Love the quote. I see from the comments that no Republicans (>40% of the US population) are participating.
I wonder what the life of an American muslim woman would be like if she wore that American Flag headpiece to her Mosque or to a Ramadan feast? I seen the hajib worn in a few photo ops and a few protests. Wish she could. I love the hajib as a fashion, hate it as a oppressive demand. My Pakistani homestay-Mom, wore a hajib in the house, and a full burka in public. Such a shame.

Well, you use the form really well, but it's hard not to respond to this poem in terms of its message rather than as a piece of poetry. It's really hard to understand how these populist bullshit merchants keep going. I've just seen a tweet from one of our Brexit party MEPs, who was elected to the European parliament with no manifesto, by claiming it was undemocratic. The tweet was complaining about how much voting she had to do. These are nonsensical, self-contradictory claims, and yet people are cheering her on. What is happening????

The only way to get even is through the polls, that's right Glenn!. Many are possibly thinking about it after seeing the damage done this far. He'll be due for re-election anyway, where he can be stopped
