Bloodstock

Bloodstock

Poets run
like treacle arteries through
brown sugar coffee cakes,
like those exotic spice flavors
we search for when we travel.

Poets are
the architects of interchange,
the thoroughbreds of theory, of recall,
at once emollient and scorched crust,
inventors of petulant proud phrases,
purveyors of linguistic ingredients,

found to be both pariah and muckraker
one moment, then prophet and sensei
the next--the odd person in the kissing booth
and the helmeted sentinel atop the great gate
of our collective emotional burhs,

serving up both sweetmeats as well as crow
at the busy corner of Silver Street & Doncaster,
mostly amateurs who do not seek recompense
for their world views, joyful for limited readerships,

grinding out iambic grist on their perpetual mind-mills,
strident & melodious voices rising above the din,
perceptive guides through the delicacies and mazes
of history, and alacritists for the dark throbs of a future
still hidden just below the lip of the horizon that is
moving toward us like a runaway freight train;

jocular, wise, smarmy, erotic, barbed, impatient,
prickly, affectionate, maniacal, and sentimental,

damned rights,
the poets are permanent equipment,
built to last, here to stay,
get used to it.

Love this, Glenn. Especially:
"Poets are
the architects of interchange,
the thoroughbreds of theory, of recall,
at once emollient and scorched crust"

And the phrase "iambic grist."
Holy cow. :)

I think "Poets run" and "Poets are" might be my favorite lines.

This is delicious and inviting: "like treacle arteries through brown sugar coffee cakes" ... It almost makes you want to cut open a poet and taste the insides! :)

"thoroughbreds of theory" ... Excellent sound and thought.

Love this: "found to be both pariah and muckraker one moment, then prophet and sensei
the next"

"the odd person in the kissing booth" ... Hilarious.

"serving up both sweetmeats as well as crow" ... Indeed.

"grinding out iambic grist" ... A lovely hum of grr's.

"perceptive guides through the delicacies and mazes" ... Awesome.

"alacritists for the dark throbs of a future still hidden just below the lip" ... Standing alone, there is more growling in this line. An intense readiness to leap, a hunger to dig up what's underneath. That is a poet, in essence.

I very much liked the list of adjectives at the end, as well as your variation of "damn right" (damned rights).

Wonderful work, Glenn, as always. Thank you!

Built to last...here to say Freaking A! Awesome post (I've been saying that lots round these parts) but love this one...my new battle cry! Deal with it non-poetry enthusiasts!

Lots of vivid word play here. Always good to get a thumbs up for the breed.

I loved that. We poets wear so many hats and are so different, and yet poetry unites us.

This is fantastic! You captured a piece of each and every one of us in your words. I see me in these:
"mostly amateurs who do not seek recompense
for their world views, joyful for limited readerships,"
Well penned!

aloha Glenn - fun. yeah. i want to be one of those.

i particularly like the image you've chosen along with the title - perfect - and good eye.

i also like where you took us on this - yeah, we are here to stay. it's built into our genetic code i suspect.

forward and off the table where the box remains - aloha.
