Extinguishing the Bern

Extinguishing the Bern

“Let us wage a moral & political war against the billionaires
& corporate heads whose policies & greed are destroying
the middle class in America.”--Bernie Sanders.

Today there is a new article in the New Yorker magazine:
Integrity disqualifies Sanders for the White House.
The electoral system has safeguards in place
preventing anyone who’s outspoken from becoming the President.

Integrity disqualifies Sanders for the White House--
this political reality conjures fear and anger,
nearly dashing all hope for a better tomorrow.

The electoral system has safeguards in place
excluding him from back room deals & cronyism
that may be a necessary requirement for election;

preventing anyone who’s outspoken from becoming President
because no Populist can raise the necessary billion dollars
while criticizing the blatant buying of the other candidates.

You have spoken truth here, Glenn & used Trimeric form perfectly to do so.
What a chilling commentary on the political process.

I would say most election systems are broken.. at least it is maximum 8 years and no changed constitution to make sure you can sit as long as possible, like Putin or Erdogan..

The world is falling apart with or without who get's elected.

So much money is spent on election campaigns ~ I beginning to wonder if candidates are really independent, not being bought out by other vested interests ~ A good political commentary Glenn ~

As usual, I will not comment on politics since we are commenting on form today but I will say you did a most excellent job with the form. This does seem to be an extremely adaptable form and it is one that seems to like you and your thoughts.

That's dreadful. The Presidential and Prime Ministerial elections around the world have become a political game played with money and influence.
A wonderful piece. And the form suits your verse perfectly. :-)

I hope the NYT is proved wrong. Bernie's voice is a refreshing one and I hope that at least some of his ideas can emerge and change people's lives for the better.

Interesting use of the form to make a political point!

Ugh...idiotic politics, I can't stand it. Well written to the form, Glenn, but the subject matter had me fuming. And yet, I'm still feeling hopeful...a little.

can't remember the quote exactly, but I recently heard that "anyone who is willing to be president should in no way be allowed to do so." It's a shame that sometimes those who are most qualified and able to lead a country have no chance at doing so, but those who end up with the position are often charlatans and scoundrels. I speak not only of your nation, but of mine (Canada), and perhaps every other nation on the planet.

This is especially thought provoking. The thought Sanders could actually win makes me uneasy.

you've used the form brilliantly for the political scenario not only true for your country but also for the whole world...money matters...sigh...

yes, a catch 22

I do like political poems - they always have a raw and gritty honesty. Yours doesn't disappoint. How terrible that our world has become so circumscribed that anyone speaking out is disqualified from becoming President.

You show how the trimeric lends itself to so many topics...including politics.

this really worked well with the form.

Too true, alas – and well said.
