Lincoln On Iraq

Lincoln on Iraq

four years and four days ago
our nation engaged in an unprovoked war
started by a ridiculous lie
that we were somehow in mortal danger

3,000 American, 50,000 Iraqis, and one third of a trillion dollars later
we are tested as to whether to believe fear
or reaffirm the ideals that this nation was founded upon

It is fitting that we honor the 3,000 brave soldiers that gave their lives
and the 150,000 soldiers still on the field of battle
by focusing on the democratic principals for which they fight

To do this in a time of increasing terror
we must let go of our need for a security that cannot be guaranteed
and instead trust in our democratic ideals that cannot be threatened
we must trust the better angles of our nature and reject those who wish to control us by fear.
