Slow Draw

painting by Andy Thomas

Slow Draw

“Sex is good, they say, but poker lasts longer.”
--Amarillo Slim.

Pecos Bob
wore that
evil smirk
as he lay down
his ace high
straight.

I was all in
and I had bet
the farm
and my pants.
I fanned out
a royal straight flush.

He went for
his Colt,
but he never
cleared leather.

If you are too slow it's better to never draw... there are some hands that always win.

Well told story in a few words. I like how he even bet his pants and could still draw faster.

Now that's supreme self-confidence … to bet one's pants! My kind of gambler!

I love a cowboy who knows his way around a poker game -- and a pistol!

Your poem reminded me of an old Western film, Glenn, echoes of childhood. America was a far-off dream. I thought it was all guns, horses, cards and saloons. We all grow up eventually, even countries.
