It Takes Two

painting by Mario Garibay.

It Takes Two

“Let there be space in togetherness, and let the
winds of heaven dance between you”
--Khalil Gibran.

Two bodes back to back
are emotional opposites;
at night opposites attract.

Two bodies back to back
are sometimes just two spines;
at night they unite.

Two bodies back to back
resist all commitment;
at night all is forgiven.

Two bodies back to back
stay warm when it’s freezing;
night makes it critical.

Two bodies back to back
are ready to celebrate;
but at night they separate.

Two bodies back to back
shift to face to face,
and the night turns to treacle.

I like Gibran's quoted thoughts on love. I had hoped for passion and romance when the two turned face to face. I'm still dealing with treacle!

Beautifully done Glenn! We chose the same poem. You stayed true to the poem in your interpretation — I went into lustful orbit, using only a suggestion from each of the Paz 5 verses to inform mine: ocean, desert, roots, steel (knife), and stars. :-)

I love your contrast in this poem. It is how it works sometimes in relationships. Well done!!

I love that the bodies are back to back in your poem, Glenn, and the lines:
‘…sometimes just two spines;
at night they unite’;
the rhyming in:
‘…ready to celebrate;
but at night they separate’;
and the final stanza – treacle is perfect!

thank you for joining in -your converse of the original inspiration works beautifully with that change over and resolution in each third line
"Two bodies back to back
shift to face to face,
and the night turns to treacle. "
Yummy!

Oh I love how you turned it around and reached the same conclusion in the end... night can do miracles.
