Mickadura-Cell

Mick, Mick:

You are like the everyready duracell Bunny --you just keep on truckin, and you ain't gettin enough f*&^%n, right? Did Curtis play a banjo in those scenes in THE QUIET MAN? In THE SEARCHERS he fought Jeffrey Hunter over a nubile Vera Miles, long before she got her throat cut in PSYCHO. Who played Mose Harper in SEARCHERS, an actor that John Ford used a lot? This actor started the film late, finishing up his role in THE INDIAN FIGHTER with Kirk Douglas. He had a great scene in ONE EYE JACKS where he was in the whore house with Brando and Malden, and the Jurala's pumped him full of lead before he could get his pants pulled up.

Good stuff came out of trivia from THE SEARCHERS. Harry Carey Sr. had died in 1947, and had been close friends of John Ford and the Duke. So Ford hired the son, Jr. to be in the picture, and Harry's wife, Olive, to play Mrs. Jorgensen. That bit with the left hand and the right elbow, a direct "tribute" to Carey Sr. was certainly done intentionally, and while it was shot, Olive was off camera watching and crying. There were some reports that a drunken Ward Bond, after hours, would open all the curtains in his motel room and walk around naked, hoping to attract Vera Miles. Ms. Miles never took the bait. Old Mose Harper was based on a real historical half-crazed Indian fighter called Mad Mose, who liked rocking chairs. In interviews later, Duke said that John Ford had hinted that maybe stalwart Ethan Edwards had actually had an affair with his brother's wife, that he might have been Lucy and Debbie's father. So his rage and need to have vengeance was based on losing his beloved sister-in-law as well as his brother, as well as his own mother to the blood thirsty Comanches. Natalie Wood was still in high school when she made the film. Often Duke or Jeffrey Hunter would go to the school to pick her up for her calls to the set. This made her pretty popular on campus. In the climactic scene toward the end, when Ethan chases Debbie, they both run up a hill that is in Monument Valley, Utah, and they come down the other side in Bronson Canyon, in Griffith Park, in the heart of Los Angeles.

You certainly nailed me on the book in Milner's pocket. I can see it in my mind, but no title floats to the surface. In THE SANDS OF IWO JIMA (1949), three of the original marines that had raised the flag in that famous photograph on the cover of LIFE magazine appeared as themselves in the film. What was the name of the LIFE photographer who took the picture? Who were the survivors in the movie? One, of course, was native American. His story, and the song about him, was shot and sang 12 years later. What was the name of that bio-film? What year was it released? Who played the lead character, with putty on his nose? This role was one of that actor's favorites. Who played his best pal in the Bio-Film, who went on to be the lead in PLANET OF THE APES II? The actor who played the unnamed native American marine hero used the nose putty in another famous film, that he also liked, and felt he had done a good job acting in. What was that film? It had Henry Fonda in it. What is the name of the new version of Iwo Jima, the new movie coming out soon directed by Clint Eastwood, and written by Paul Haggis?

In ENSIGN PULVER, yup that was Walter Matthau playing William Powell. The future super star in the ranks was Jack Nicholson. You didn't remember Betsy Palmer on AS THE WORLD TURNS or in KNOT'S LANDING? For Shame, Mickster. So I've got the jumping horse in my mind, and you have the motor boat. What does that say about either of us? Kudos on TO HELL AND BACK, yup, the trio were Jack Kelly, Marshal Thompson, and David Janssen. Also yes on George Kennedy's short lived series based on Bumper Morgan in THE BLUE KNIGHT. William Holden was great in the original mini-series, by the way. Paul Newman should have been given an Oscar for THE HUSTLER, HUD, and COOL HAND LUKE. The Academy is made up of twits and faggots. On JUDGE ROY BEAN with Edgar Buchanan, the cowboy star was none other than the Italian Stallion, Lash LaRue. In THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE ROY BEAN, yes, that was Ava Gardner as Lily, and old Huston himself did Grizzly Adams. He did another cameo in THE MALTESE FALCON, and one in THE MAN IN THE WILDERNESS. Bad Bob the Albino was played by crazy Stacy Keach. What film did he debut in, working without his hairpiece, as a drifter and carnie? Alan Arkin was in the film.

As THE MAG SEVEN and its whelps. RETURN OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1964) had Yul Brynner as Chris "Adams"; no relation to Seth Adams, or Doc Adams, or Grizzly Adams. You nailed the main two actors, Warren Oates (as a ladies man?) and Claude Akins. But how could you forget the McQueen clone, Robert Fuller, or the greaser buddy, Julian Mateos. In the Third film, GUNS OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1969), big George Kennedy played Chris, and his motley crew included James Whitmore, Monte Markam, Joe Don Baker, Bernie Casey, and Reni Santoni. The bad bandidos were Michael Ansara and Frank Silvera. Who can forget Silvera as the Bandido buddy to Richard Boone in HOMBRE? In the Fouth film, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN RIDE (1972), Lee Van Cleef played Chris, and his ragged posse included Michael Callan, Luke Askew, Ralph Waite, and Pedro Armendariz Jr. The TV series, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1998-2000), had Michael Biehn playing the lead as Chris "Larabie"; go figure. His gang included Ron Perlman and Eric Close. And now, sir, you know all that is worth knowing about the MAG 7.

Good for you on remembering Eli Wallach as Tuco in THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY TUCO (1966). I was thinking of his bandido train robber, Charlie Gant in that flat black Mexican hat in HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1962), and of course his role as Cacapoulos in ACES HIGH (1968). And yes, he was outstanding in LORD JIM (1965), just before the flew to Spain to do Sergio Leone's epic. Yes, it was Curt Jurgens who was the German who swallowed the diamond, and Wallach told him,"This too will pass. And when it does, give it back!". The English Bad guy in the bowler hat was James Mason though, not Jack Hawkins. Actually Hawkins was not in the picture. Do you remember Akim Tamiroff and Paul Lukas? What was the name of the lovely actress who played the Girl?

I remember the quote, but--maybe it was Billy Wilder. Or Peter Bogdonovich. Or Otto Preminger? ROBBY THE ROBOT debuted in FORBIDDEN PLANET. His voice was provided by Marvin Miller, who I used to get confused with Martin Milner. Miller did the narration for the trailer too. Robert Kinosheta was the creator and builder of Robby, and later he was Art director on LOST IN SPACE, and that's how Robby made it to that series. He also got used in a TWILIGHT ZONE episode. What was the title of that. ROBBY resides in the private residence these days of William Malone.

What, I get no atta'boy for getting Peter Graves to Lee Marvin in (3)?

Nice job of getting Jayne Mansfield to Tyrone Power in (3). I got there in three too, but down a different road.
Jayne was in PETE KELLY'S BLUES (1955) with Edmond O'Brien.
Edmond O'Brien was in THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1939) with Charles Laughton. Laughton was in WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION (1957) with Tyrone Power. Amazing to me how many different ways this game goes. I will do the Titty Twister from Gilbert Roland to Fred MacMurray during lunch.

Glenn P.S.: Christ, I hope you are saving these emails, for there is a wealth of information in our banter and exchanges. We could publish the messages and a book, and call it MICK & BUTT AT THE MOVIES.

Okay, kudos and grats on your Festus answers! What instrument did Ken Curtis play in the bar scenes in The Quiet Man and who did he fight over what girl in The Searchers? The Duke stole that move where he grabed his right elbow with his left hand in the closing scene from Harry Carey Sr who used it in silent westerns to express loneliness and that was what Duke showed in that final scene. I recall Harrys son in Mr Roberts along with the future Johnny Yuma"The Rebel" Capt. Parmetter "Laredo" and Todd Stiles "Route 66" who did a great job with that staged southern accent trying to explain to Mr Roberts what they call a whore house in Alabama. What book did Martin Milner have in his fatigue shirt when he was killed on the beach in The Sands of Iwo Jima? I believe Walter Matthau played the doctor and the future superstar has me by the scows bilge pumps in Ensign Pulver. I remember Betsy Palmer as a regular guest panelist on I've Got a Secret with Bess Myerson who I think was the most beautiful Miss and ex Miss America of them all. I don't remember the jumping horse commercial. Jack Kelley"Bart Maverick", Marshall Thompson"The cross eyed lion in Daktari" and Lt. Lee, David Jannsen"Dr. Richard Kimball in the Fugitive" helped Audie kill them Krauts.

You bulls eyed Newmans crooning career his one and only time he sang in his movies. I read an article in which Newman said that character "Luke" was his favorite part and he actually felt sorry for him with all his brains and talent with no place to go and no way to get there with no help either like the scene in the church personified. Yes, youre right, he should have won the Oscar. I think George starred in one of those Joseph Wambaugh cop books turned into movies and I will guess he played Bumper Morgan in The Blue Knight.

I think Ben Johnson was the cowboy on the tv Judge Roy Bean, Ava Gardner played Lily, John Huston did a cameo as Grizzly Adams in his own movie something he likes to do. I know you can name me another Huston cameo? The albino slips through my pink eyes. I only recall the first remake of the mag 7 which had Warren Oates, a great seedy actor, and Claude Akins. Eli did Tuco in The Good Bad and Ugly which was just as good. He was great in Lord Jim, Joseph Conrads book I read in High School, great movie. The English meanie was Jack Hawkins and Curt Jergens was the German counterpart.

Who was the voice of Robby the Robot in The Forbidden Planet? Who spoke these immortal words "you can take all the sincerety in Hollywood and put it in a fleas navel and still have room left over for 3 caroway seeds and an agents heart?"

Okay, Titty twister time:
Jayne was in The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw with Bruce Cabot,
Bruce was in McClintock with Maureen O'hara,
Maureen was in The Long Gray Line with Tyrone Power.
This is a 6 degree thermometer teaser! Connect targer Gilbert Roland with good old Fred MacMurry!

Regards, the kid voted as the most likely not to succeed by my high school buddies, Mick!
