Mick:
I guess I am just going to have to retire so that I can find time to keep up with your emails. Christ, sir, you are using up what little free time I have, and you can see how much I hate it. As to MR. ROBERTS (1955), yeah, you got all that trivia down cold. Nice recall on the Jack Lemmon on Carson. Fonda, after doing the part on Broadway, really had that part in his blood. I had forgotten about the young Patrick Wayne in it. I remembered Ken Curtis and Ward Bond. Do you remember Harry Carey jr., Nick Adams, Philip Carey, and Martin Milner? You were partially right on the sequel, ENSIGN PULVER (1964), and it did star Burl Ives. But young Jim Hutton was never in it. That would have been the young Robert Walker Jr. Who played William Powell's part, the doctor? And what future super star had a small part in it? As to the svelte Betsy Palmer as the nurse, she was primarily a TV star. She did work with Fonda again in 1957 in THE TIN STAR, with Anthony Perkins. I think as far as TV series she might have been on, she did AS THE WORLD TURNS in 1982, and she settled in as a character on KNOT'S LANDING in 1979.
The Timex/Swyaze moment was somehow missed by me. Do you remember the diving horse commercial? Me and Cpl. Boone just cannot connect. Good recall on Jaeckel and Tucker in IWO JIMA. I can just barely remember or hear John McIntire's voice narrating TO HELL AND BACK. Who played Lt. Lee in it? Which one of the future MAVERICKs was in it? How about that guy from DAKTARI?
As to ALIAS JESSE JAMES, you ought to rent it and watch it. It's a hoot! The very famous cameos included Ward Bond as Major Seth Adams, James Arness at Matt Dillon, James Garner as Bret Maverick, Hugh O'Brien as Wyatt Earp, Roy Rogers and Trigger, Gail Davis as Annie Oakley, Fess Parker as Davy Crockett, and of course Jay Silverheels as Tonto, with Gary Cooper and Bing Crosby thrown in for laughs. What I get no credit for coming up with Ken Curtis as a regular on RIPCORD and THE YELLOW ROSE?
Man, you were 200% accurate on COOL HAND LUKE. About the only actor you left out was Ralph Waite, the traveling salesman who whined about the hard work. Yeah, Joy Harmon was the most bodacious car washer I can recall. Patty Jo Harmon, born in 1940, started doing TV and movies at 16 years old. Did a BEVERLY HILLBILLIES at one point. She kept doing TV, like THE MONKEES and THE ODD COUPLE until 1973, when she packed "them" in. I think Paul Newman may have hummed in BUTCH CASSIDY, but this film was his only "attempt" at singing I recall. Newman should have been given an Oscar for that role. At the end, when he is holed up in that church, and he is taking to God, "Old Man --Where do I fit in?" Kennedy was great as the hulking Dragline, albeit a bit hammy. He never really had any acting training. He just started doing it. What TV series did he do, based on a mini-series starring William Holden?
The narrator for ZULU was Richard Burton who was Welsh, but hell, that's in the British Isles, right? Correctamundo on Spencer Tracy for MAD WORLD. And excellent nailing all those actors correctly for Judge Roy Bean, Brennan, Newman, and Buchanan. In the 1972 Huston version who played Bad Bob the Albino, and who played Grizzly Adams? In the 1956 TV version, what famous movie cowboy was a regular on the show? Who played Lily in Huston's film? Again excellent recall for the troops in HELL IS FOR HEROES. You only left out little Nick Adams, and old L.Q. Jones.
100% accuracy on all THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. Most people forget poor Brad Dexter, and/or Horst Buchholz. Yes Eli Wallach made a great bandido. He played a Mexican bandit in several other films after this. Can you name one? One of my favorite roles he had was a war lord in a film with Peter O'Toole. What was that film, and what British actor also was a bad guy in it, and what German actor was nasty too? Now as to the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, there were three sequels, and a television series. What was the first sequel? It was done in 1966. Yul Brynner was in it, the only original cast member. Name at least two actors who made up his "new" Seven. By the way, the leader of the pack is always named "Chris". What was his last name? MAG SEVEN III was made in 1969. Who was Chris, and name three of the seven? MAG SEVEN IV was made in 1972. Who played Chris, and name one of the seven? MAG SEVEN, the TV series was from 1998-2000. Who played Chris, and what was the character's last name? It was different than in the films. Name one other cast member. The actor who played Chris was in THE TERMINATOR, and played Johnny Ringo in TOMBSTONE.
The Japanese director was Akira Kurosawa. He also directed YOJIMBO, which became A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, and SANJURO, which became A FEW DOLLARS MORE. Great job in getting Joel McCrea to Robert Mitchum in (3) degrees. Ward Bond played a character that was supposed to be John Ford, eye patch and all. But since John Ford was directing WINGS OF EAGLES, he had some fun with the character, and called him John "Dodge".
Again, I took more time getting Joel McCrea to Robert Mitchum.
Joel McCrea was in RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY (1962) with Warren Oates.
Warren Oates was in THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN (1970) with Kirk Douglas.
Kirk Douglas was in THE WAR WAGON with John Wayne.
John Wayne was in EL DORADO with Robert Mitchum.
Or
Warren Oates was in THERE WAS A CROOKED MAN with Gene Evans.
Gene Evans was in THE HELEN MORGAN STORY (1957) with Paul Newman.
Paul Newman was in THE RACK (1956) with Lee Marvin.
Lee Marvin was in CAT BALLOU (1965) with Arthur Hunnicutt.
Arthur Hunicutt was in THE LUSTY MEN (1952) & EL DORADO with R.Mitchum.
I will get busy connecting Peter Graves and Lee Marvin.
Hugs & Heartburn: Glenn

Yea, Jack Lemmons parting shot at the hateful, sadistic Captain "James Cagney" is still with me today! Ensign Pulver had come of age to become the mens new Mr. Roberts. I heard Jack say how petrified he was in his first big part in the movies playing with those three giants: Henry Fonda, James Gagney and William Powell to Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show. He also said his favorite actress to work with on and off camera was Judy Holliday, who regrettably died so young. Ken Curtis was in that one too along with a very young Patrick Wayne who Ward Bond looked after. Betsy Palmer played the head nurse, not to be confused with the nurse giving the best head, and what tv show was she a regular on?
Oh, early fifties live tv and commercials, where the spokesperson for Timex, John Cameron Swayze, affixed the watch to the propeller of an outboard motor in a water tank for the viewing audience to observe and when the propeller stopped the flustered Swayze pronounced he could not find the watch but if he could it would prove once again that Timex takes a licking but keeps on ticking. Cpl Randy Boone was on Rin Tin Tin played by that goof ball who died of measles in Gone With The Wind. In The Sands of Iwo Jima I recall Tucker, Jaekel and even Richard Webb who was Captain Midnight on tv sponsored by Ovaltine. John McIntyre was the narrator in To Hell and Back.
I never saw the Bob Hope, Jesse James movie so I take the big zero on that one. The actors in Cool Hand Luke that I recall are: George Kennedy, J D Cannon, Wayne Rogers, Strother"a failure to communicate" Martin, Harry Dean Stanton, Dennis Hopper, Clifton James. The last time I met big George Kennedy he said Mick you're a natural born world shaker so I've been shaking it up boss, shaking it, shaking it ever since. You hit a nerve with Joy Harmon the girl referred to by big George as Lucy, "any woman look that good her name just gotta be Lucy." When that movie was over I made a point of sticking around for the credits to see who she was and I never saw her again but I keep on looking. I heard that Morgan Woodward wore regular glasses for his part but after staring at those delicious, melonesque jugs he had to wear those silver jobs. Arletta was played by Jo Van Fleet and what a job she did, smoking those cigs and telling Luke he was a wild one and just like his Pa had no mean or hate in him. After she died Newman sang, I don't care if the sun don't shine" and was that the only time he sang in his movies?
I never saw Zulu so I will guess it had to be an Englishman, they were the ones exploring that part of Africa, maybe Orson Welles did it, he liked the heady introspective work. I believe Spencer Tracy was the voice for Mad World because it couldn't be Buster Keaton who was famous for his "Silence in Movies". The Westerner was Walters and Coops Judge Roy Bean, Newman did him in are day and the gravely voiced Edgar Buchannan did him on tv but I don't recall the title. I think they all had a hardon for Lily Langtry?
Okay, Hell is for Heroes: Fess Parker, James Coburn, Booby "Mack The Knife" Darin, Harry Guardino and even the real G.I. Joe tough guy Bob Newhart. The Magnificent Seven: Yul Bryner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Brad Dexter, Robert Vaughn, and introducing Horst Bucholtz. The name of the Japanese Director escapes me from the 7 Samurai so I will commit Hari Kari with a Samurai sword on those. Eli Wallach one hell of a character actor! I think the remake of Mr Roberts was titled Ensign Pulver with Jim Hutton as Pulver and Burl Ives as the Captain???
Okay Joel to Mitch:
Joel was in The Tall Stranger with Barry Kelly who played his brother,
Barry Kelly played Jocko with Duke Wayne in The Wings of Eagles,
Duke starred with Mitch in El Dorado, 3 degrees.
What real life part did Ward Bond play in The Wings of Eagles? Festus was in that one too. Okay connect target actor Peter Graves with Lee Marvin! Good Luck.
Well it's time just like Jimmy Durante said in his dying scene from It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World when he kicked the pail, I think I will kick the bucket!
Regards, The slightly demented turmoiled trivia twister, Mick!
